Escape to Fire Island

November 01, 2014

Do you like bundling up and walking on the beach? If you do, a sunny winter day can be a great time to visit Fire Island Lighthouse. Built in 1857 and still used for navigation today, this lighthouse was often the first sight that European immigrants had when arriving to America. A must-see for both nature lovers and nautical history buffs, the lighthouse is located on a remote and breathtakingly unspoiled stretch of beach on Captree Island. When you enter, there's a quaint museum on the first floor that displays photos and artifacts describing the lighthouse's fascinating history, including descriptions of courageous sea rescues and details of the every-day life of the lighthouse keepers and their families. And after walking up the 182 steps to the top of the lighthouse, you'll be rewarded with a magnificent view of the island, the bay and, on a clear day, even the Empire State Building. Plus, interesting lectures are scheduled most weekends. Don't miss out on the Thanksgiving weekend night tour and tree trimming event. This pleasant day trip is a great way to escape the hustle-and-bustle of the city and to learn about the perils of nautical life and the valuable contributions made by the lighthouse and the people who worked there.
