Cathedral of the Incarnation

June 06, 2017

The Cathedral of the Incarnation, part of the Episcopalian Diocese, opened its doors in 1885 in Garden City. The cathedral was built by Cornelia Stewart as a memorial to her husband, Alexander T. Stewart, who counted men like Cornelius Vanderbilt and William B. Astor as his peers. This beautiful and historic building is less than half a mile from the Garden City Hotel, well within walking distance. These days, you are able go on a guided tour of the cathedral after Sunday and Wednesday services. Your knowledgeable tour guide will explain the history of the cathedral which intertwines with the history of Garden City. Self-guided tours are also available Tuesday-Friday from 9Am- 4PM. As you step into the Gothic style cathedral, your eyes will be drawn to the beautiful and ornate stained-glass windows. The cathedral’s organ, installed in 1986, is the largest pipe organ on Long Island. The Cathedral of the Incarnation is the perfect place to spend a peaceful afternoon while learning about the history of Garden City.
